The first call is often your only shot. American meeting culture differs from ours enough that preparation pays off.
Time zones: propose three time slots yourself, and always state both zones in writing, for example 3:00 PM EST, i.e. 10:00 PM Estonian time. The US East Coast is seven hours behind us, which means late evenings, and that is simply the price of this market.
Agenda up front: three points spelled out already in the invitation. Americans respect structure and a half-hour frame.
Small talk is short and mandatory: the weather, the weekend, two minutes maximum, then down to business. Talk less than you listen: ask about their volumes, current suppliers and pain points; our data gives you a solid basis for those questions.
Always end with a concrete next step: I will send the price list and a sample tomorrow, does that work. Without it, the call was just a pleasant conversation.
A written recap the same evening: what we agreed, what comes next, by what date. In American business culture this email is a required part of the process, not a courtesy. And then keep your deadlines to the minute: the first promise is the first test.
The first consultation is free: together we'll see who in the US already buys your product and how to reach them.
