Amazon or B2B wholesale: two different businesses that should not be mixed

Many Estonian manufacturers start the USA with Amazon and are disappointed. We explain which path suits which business.

Amazon is retail, not export

Amazon FBA means you become a US retailer with all the obligations that entails: consumer marketing, advertising costs, returns, inventory and platform fees that together often eat up more than half of the selling price. It can work for a brand that has a story and a margin, but it is a separate business model, not a byproduct of exporting.

B2B wholesale is a different animal: fewer customers, larger quantities, a lower unit margin, but also many times lower marketing costs and a rhythm that suits your production.

Which one for you

If you make components, materials or goods for other brands, the answer is clear: B2B, and Amazon is not your topic at all. If you have a consumer brand, Amazon can be a test channel, but even then wholesale to retail chains and resellers is often the faster route to steady volume.

The worst option is to do both halfheartedly: an Amazon account that withers, and wholesale that gets no commitment.
