Exporting plastics to the USA: where the small manufacturer wins

You will not beat Asia on the price of raw plastic. But in technical parts, specialty films and small batches, the European manufacturer has a clear edge.

Three working niches

Customs data shows three strong branches in the flow of European plastics to the USA. First, technical parts: precision molding, machined components and small batches, where quality and speed matter, not the unit price. Second, specialty films and packaging materials for the food industry, where EU certificates are a selling point. Third, products made from recycled material, for which the sustainability requirements of large US customers are growing demand.

In mass plastics, such as buckets and simple consumer goods, Europe does not compete on price, and it is not worth trying.

What buyers say

The average US plastics buyer is often a manufacturer themselves, buying in components or semi-finished goods. Their pain is Asian lead times: twelve weeks from order to goods kills flexibility. Europe's four-to-six-week cycle is a strong argument, especially combined with a smaller minimum batch size.

Add a time zone that allows same-business-day communication, and the picture clears up: you are not selling cheaper plastic, you are selling a faster and more reliable supply chain.
