Port profile: Houston and the peculiarities of the Gulf of Mexico

Houston is the energy sector's port, but not only that. Texas's growth makes it a serious gateway for ordinary goods too.

Two faces

Houston is one of the world's centers of energy trade: oil, chemicals and project cargo dominate. But as a container port it has grown into the US top ten, because Texas's consumption and industry need their own gateway.

European container lines serve Houston regularly, with a transit time a couple of days longer than to the East Coast.

When Houston wins

If the buyer is in Texas or neighboring states, Houston saves thousands of dollars in inland transport compared with an East Coast port. For energy and industrial equipment, the handling experience here is a value in itself: heavy and oversized cargo is routine in Houston.

For project cargo - such as production lines or modular building units - the Gulf of Mexico ports are often the most flexible.
